The inspection is the visible part. The report is the part that actually saves you money. So it’s worth understanding what you’re getting and why the quality of it matters more than people think.
What the report is
Your wind mitigation report is the state’s uniform mitigation form (the OIR-B1-1802, or “1802”), filled out for your specific home and backed up with photos of each documented feature. You get it as a PDF, delivered the next business day. That single document is what your insurance company uses to apply credits to the windstorm portion of your premium.
Why photo quality and accuracy matter
Here’s the part that separates a good report from a cheap one: since 2012, every feature has to be supported by a clear photo, and insurance carriers are picky. A report with blurry, missing, or mislabeled photos can get bounced back — which means delays, a possible re-inspection, and a discount that’s stuck in limbo while your renewal clock ticks. What to do with it
Forward the PDF to your insurance agent. They apply whatever credits your home earned, and the form typically stays valid for up to five years, provided you don’t make major changes to the roof, windows, or doors. If you switch carriers within that window, the same report usually travels with you.
Hang onto your copy, too. If you upgrade your roof or add impact windows down the road, you’ll want a fresh inspection — those changes can unlock credits the old report doesn’t reflect.
